The decisions we make while growing up should not be negotiated with those around us, but rather judged as independently as possible. Consultation is only necessary if the people around you possess high levels of experience and judgment. If you lack such judgment yourself, you’ll likely take their advice for granted and follow it unquestioningly. Over time, this leads to gradually becoming as timid and characterless as they are. In such an environment, trusting your own judgment may actually mean drawing upon the wisdom of outstanding figures from history and successful thinkers.
